Area Event: Basic Archives Workshop

The Friends of California Archives and the California State Archives are offering a one-day basic archives workshop on Friday, March 4, 2011 from 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. This workshop is designed for anyone who works with historical records, but has little or no formal training.

Participants will get practical advice, sample forms and policies, and learn basic practices for collecting, organizing, protecting, and helping people use historical records.

The workshop will be held at the University of Southern California, Doheny Memorial Library, Lecture Hall, Room 240, 3550 Trousdale Parkway, Los Angeles, CA 90089.

In this workshop you'll learn about:
-Identifying historical records.
-What to keep.
-Securing legal title to your collections.
-Organizing historical collections.
-Copyright issues.
-Helping researchers use your collections.
-Preservation of historical records.
-Handling photographs, maps,audiovisual records, and electronic records.
-Proper building environment.
-Security for historical records.
-Promoting your collections.
-Where to go for more information.

Cost for the workshop is $50.00 per person payable by cash or check. If paying by check, make it payable to "Friends of California Archives". Registration will be limited to thirty people.
