The SCGS TMG User Group (TMG-UG) is a forum where users of The Master Genealogist® (TMG) software gather to discuss features, issues, and practical application of the “the gold standard in family history software” and its companion software, Second Site©.

The TMG-UG meetings are held at the Southern California Genealogical Society Family Research Library in Burbank. The SCGS TMG User Group meets monthly on the afternoon of the first Saturday of the month with the exception of holiday weekends and dates of special SCGS events.  Please check the SCGS calendar for updates.

Our meeting format generally consists of a meet-and-greet period, questions from new attendees, a question-and-answer session, and a presentation, usually given by Patt Ricketts, SCGS member and TMG user since 1997.

The TMG User Group is an interest group of the Southern California Genealogical Society.  Meetings are open to the general public.  There is no fee for participation.  Donations are gratefully accepted.

If you are a TMG user or are thinking about moving your data to TMG, why not join us?  Bring your questions about TMG functionality, importing data from other software, and “how to” with you and learn how TMG can meet all of your genealogical software needs.

The SCGS Library is not open for research during the meeting.

Please direct any questions to kinklector@gmail.com.

 Meeting Notice, November 10, 2013

'Tool Time’ at Family Tree Maker User Group

“Tool Man” Dick Humphrey
  • Are you confused about what happens to parts of a name when entering in Family Tree Maker?
  • How can I relocate a person attached incorrectly as a spouse?
  • What if I have two separate records for the same person?
  • What about foreign language names?
  • Everything is so small!  Is there anything I can do to make the screen more readable?
  • How can I copy something on the screen when there is no ‘download’ or ‘save’ available?

  • The theme of the upcoming meeting is ‘Tool Time’ and we will address these issues.  Come and join us on Sunday, November 10, from 4:00-6:00pm at the SCGS Library.

The meeting is open to the public; attendees do not need to be members of SCGS.

For questions, contact Dick Humphrey at rlh1335@gmail.com.

This month we will explore all things Tagging.  Tagging members in your tree is an easy way to organize your line for specific purposes--certain family members, locations, etc.  We will continue to preview updates on Legacy 8.  As always, there will be time to practice and review the new skills as well as ask questions.  You may want to bring your laptop or tablet to practice the skills and explore Legacy’s capabilities.

Whether you are a beginner or an expert, the Legacy Family Tree User Group is a forum to learn the basics of using this software program, answer questions to further your knowledge and efficiency and, to assist others with your expertise.

If you are considering Legacy Family Tree, the user group is a great way to explore the program to assist in your decision to use it or not.  All levels of ability are welcome to participate!

The meeting is open to the public and no RSVP is needed.  E-mail Barb Randall for more information at barbmran@aol.com.

SoCal Genealogists wanted for TV Commercial - ACT FAST!

I received a call from a casting company that is looking for Ancestry.com customers. They are looking for Southern California genealogists with a compelling family story to tell that involves the use of Ancestry.com or AncestryDNA. This notice has an insanely short time frame ... auditions are Monday and Tuesday, November 4 and 5 in Glendale. People who respond through this message will receive priority. This is for a commercial and is a paid gig. They are particularly interested in younger genealogists (20s – 30s – 40s) but will take the best story regardless of age. Contact ASAP and mention that you heard from Paula of the Southern California Genealogical Society. Josh Temple Dan Bell Casting in Los Angeles 818-844-8900 office 619-471-5888 mobile (preferred)
