Hispanic Genealogy Day at West LA FHL

Passing this along from our friends at Genealogical Society of Hispanic America - Southern California Chapter. For more information, contact Donie at doniegsha@earthlink.net.
HISPANIC WEDNESDAY at West LA Family History Library

5 Sept 2012 GSHA-SC hosts Hispanic Wednesday at the West Los Angeles Family History Library from 3-9pm. The FHL is located at 10741 Santa Monica Blvd, Los Angeles, California 90025.

The Hispanic Research days focus on research; there is no workshop or presentation, but we can provide 1:1 assistance with creating a TO DO LIST, organizing your material, filling out charts, citing sources, and working with a genealogical database. Experts will be on hand whenever possible to assist you with Arizona, California, Colorado, Mexico, New Mexico and Texas research.

If this is your first visit to any of the library, we can provide a tour. If you have friends or family members, bring them along--even if they are not Hispanic researchers, these libraries have reference material for all researchers.

Please contact Donie ahead of schedule by email at (doniegsha@earthlink.net) so she can schedule expert help to assist you if available.

Chinese American Interest Group Meets 18 Aug

SCGS is pleased to announce our newest interest group.

The Chinese American Interest Group is newly formed and will begin meeting in 2012. The formation of this group is an outgrowth of a group which has been meeting informally for the past year.

Our focus is on gathering information and resources to assist those on a quest to trace their Chinese American ancestors, with special attention to the impact on family histories of the Exclusion Act
(1882-1943) and restrictive quotas which did not change until the late 1960's.

We will meet from 10am to 12 noon on the third Saturday of the dates listed below. As the times may change, please confirm the date and time with the office. Also, we may have additional activities such as field trips. If you are attending for the first time, you may wish to notify the group of any special research issues you may have.

Announcing the SCGS Family Tree Maker User Group

The Southern California Genealogical Society is pleased to announce the formation of a user group for Ancestry’s Family Tree Maker genealogy software program. Meetings will be held at the SCGS Library in Burbank on the fourth Sunday of each month, from 2-4 p.m.

User group meetings will provide information for all levels of FTM users from beginner to advanced and serve as a forum for all to share their knowledge of this great software tool for keeping track of your genealogical efforts. The emphasis will be on how to record your information and how to use the program productively.

The first meeting of the user group has been scheduled as follows

Date:    Sunday, August 26, 2012
Time:    2-4 p.m.
Place:   SCGS Library
  417 Irving Drive
(just north of Glenoaks between Scott Rd. and Buena Vista St.)

Family Tree Maker, now at version 2012, is a full-featured and very rich program for storing and working with genealogical information.
  • Over time, we can explore in depth each of the 7 major workspaces in FTM 2012 - Plan, People, Places, Media, Sources, Publish and Web Search - as well as popular features like TreeSync with Ancestry Member Trees
  • We will discuss options and the rationales for choosing various approaches – no single way is best for everyone
  • Experienced users can share tips with those wishing to migrate from earlier FTM versions.
At the first meeting, plan to share your genealogical interests, software version, and problem areas to help with setting agendas for future meetings.
