[CA-SCGS] Important Update in Member Benefits - Southern California Genealogical Society

We want to take this opportunity to update you about changes in benefits for members of the Southern California Genealogical Society.
  • As of October 31, we will no longer be able to provide remote access to Fold3. Last week, EBSCO, the distributor for Fold3, notified us that they will no longer be carrying Fold3 as of the end of December. Since our contract with EBSCO ends on November 1, 2014, our remote access to Fold3 will end on that date. Remote access for our members will be available as usual through Friday, October 31. We encourage you to take advantage of the remaining days to research the military records of your ancestors. Members, just log in to the members-only section of the website and then click the link to Fold3.
  • As of November 1, SCGS will provide remote access to MyHeritage Library Edition. A list of the outstanding resources available through the MyHeritage Library Edition can be found here. Please note that some content in MyHeritage's individual collection will not be included in the Library Edition. Two such exclusions are NewspaperARCHIVE and a collection of genealogy and local history books from Genealogical Publishing Company.
I’m sure you are wondering about this change and how it affects your ability to conduct research. We appreciate that the announcement about Fold3 comes as a surprise. It was a surprise to the Board of Directors as well. SCGS is committed to offering valuable benefits to its members, and the Board acted immediately to identify a replacement for Fold3.

SCGS subscribes to several online genealogical resources as a benefit for our members. Subscriptions are selected based on evaluation of potential usage, cost, and content by the Board of Directors. These “Institutional Subscription” contract durations vary depending on distributor terms and conditions. Databases included in these institutional subscriptions may differ somewhat from those available through individual subscriptions. These online data resources may be accessed by members working onsite at the SCGS Family Research Library.

Some subscriptions provide remote access to SCGS members. Remote access to these subscriptions is subject to change or cancellation at any time due to changes in terms and conditions in contracts with the distributors. Continued remote access to these subscriptions is controlled by the distributor and SCGS cannot guarantee their availability.

  2. It would have been helpful if you had made this announcement to your membership by email.

  3. Janice, thank you for your comment.

Because of the ability to communicate quickly and easily, we use our two blogs and e-newsletters to keep our members informed with up-to-the-minute announcements.

We sent an email newsletter on 21 October, and one of the featured articles of that newsletter contained a brief announcement, with a link direct to this post. The announcement was also carried on Facebook, Twitter, and other social media.

We encourage our members and other interested readers to subscribe to the blogs so you receive announcements delivered direct to your inbox. Many of our readers use this method of keeping in touch with SCGS.

If you aren’t subscribed, you can sign up on the blog pages at http://scgsgenealogy.blogspot.com/ and http://genealogyjamboree.blogspot.com.

I’m sorry that you missed it and hope that you’ll sign up to receive both the Jamboree and the SCGS blog posts by mail.

  4. I've been trying to access MyHeritage Library Edition since Nov. 2 and it never has worked. Today, as always, I signed in and clicked the link for MyHeritage, and clicked the EBSCO link for MyHeritage and this page showed up: "Page not found
The page you are looking for is unavailable. Perhaps you followed a link to get here, and the link was bad. No harm done, just click 'Go to MyHeritage.com' below to access our Web site." I've tried to get there on my HP AND on my Mac and the result is the same!

Am I the only one who can't get to MyHeritage site from SCGS website?

  5. Terri, you're not the only one. I am having the same problem. Our IT team is checking into it and I'll post another note when we have a resolution. Thanks for letting us know.
