[CA-SCGS] SCGS German Interest Group Meeting and Potluck - Saturday, October, 17, 2015

The Southern California Genealogical Society German Interest Group will hold their annual potluck on Saturday, October 17, 2015 beginning at 12:00 noon.  The regular meeting will follow from 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm.

All are welcome to join the group for their annual potluck and to enjoy the many delicious German foods that will be available.  Please feel free to bring your favorite dish, whether it is strictly German or not.

Following the potluck, Alene Neff will present Her Gentzch & Strubin Family: a brick wall.  Then Mary Daly will present Her Mystery Family followed by Allene Aubertin presenting The Benasco & Meyer Families from the Alsace Region and Trier, Germany.

The featured group member this month is Melanie Gnad.

With a livelong interest in history and murder mysteries, Melanie Gnad's undertaking of genealogical research wasn't a big surprise.  About 10 years ago, her brother, Phil Seiflein, gave her a box of papers and photographs representing a decade of interviewing almost every living relative he could track down.  Next, her husband, Tom had inherited a box of old photographs that needed identification.  Melanie was intrigued and started looking at ways to compile the information so these family memories weren't lost.  Among her biggest resources were joining SCGS, participating in their annual Jamboree since 2006, joining the SCGS German Interest Group and more recently becoming a member of the Immigrant Genealogical Society.  On a recent project for the German Interest Group, the focus on one relative's journey brought more clues about other family mysteries.  She is looking forward to solving more mysteries and sharing the results not only on paper but by also looking into the many media choices now available so "the kids" may also enjoy their history.

The goal of the SCGS German Interest Group is to provide a wide range of resources both inside and outside the SCGS Library to help trace German families.  They often have a speaker on German research and the group is happy to offer assistance with your German research problems.  New members and guests are always welcome.
