Resolving Place Names in Family Tree Maker

Early genealogy software often provided only a single field for both the name of the place and a descriptive comment for facts. Modern versions have separate place and description fields. The "Resolve All Place Names" tool in Family Tree Maker works well to identify and properly separate these two data elements. Additionally, it can align the place names entered in your tree with the standardized place name authority table included with FTM. Resolved places in Family Tree Maker contain location coordinates which allow them to be readily displayed on maps. Additionally, only resolved places can be shown in FTM's handy hierarchical index list.

In the session, an early Family Tree Maker for Windows tree will be imported into FTM2014 and then processed with the Resolve All Place Names tool. The separation of place and description content will be demonstrated. Secondly, the tool's usefulness in creating map-ready, fully delineated jurisdiction names will be carefully illustrated.

Bring your laptop - PC or Mac - to the library early and work on your tree. Dick will be available from 2:30 pm for help and questions with Family Tree Maker.
