[CA-SCGS] Family Tree Maker User Group meeting, January 10, 2016

Preparing for Future Directions

Although sales of Family Tree Maker are now discontinued by Ancestry.com, the program itself along with TreeSync and Ancestry web clipping continue to function normally throughout the entire year 2016. There is absolutely no need to make any rash moves at this time. If changing to another genealogy software program will be the direction that you eventually take, do note that both Legacy and RootsMagic have already released updates to their offerings to improve the import of data from FTM. In fact, RootsMagic has done it twice in December!

Whether or not you make a switch, now is an excellent time to examine your tree for problems and quality issues.

In our January 10, 2016, meeting we will focus on the following topics:
  1. Clean up your tree. Procedures will be reviewed to check on people (facts and relationships), places, pictures (images) and sources - the principal data tables in FTM.
  2. Backup your tree. The backup process for Family Tree Maker and the procedures for downloading and uploading online Ancestry trees will be demonstrated.
  3. Transfer your tree. The mysterious GEDCOM is the standard for transferring data to other genealogy programs. An overview of GEDCOMs will be presented along with a demonstration of a sample migration of an FTM tree to other software.
Obviously this will be a ‘meaty’ session. So bring your thinking cap and get settled in for a fruitful time.
Dick will be at the library by 2:30pm to chat and provide FTM assistance.
