The enthusiastic German Interest Group will hold their next meeting on Saturday, September 17, 2016 from 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm at the SCGS Library in Burbank.
The meeting will begin with the popular "Common German Words" by Edward McKelvey and "Reading German Gothic Script" by Walt Sturrock. Then Ron Finely will share his research into "Five German Ancestral Families" with the group.
Ron, who thinks of himself as really only a novice family historian, first became interested in his German ancestry years ago when his mother (who is of French ancestry) mentioned Ron's father's German lineage. She provided him with the surnames of several ancestors who immigrated in the 19th century. Ron has subsequently traced his own surname back to his great great grandfather, Johan Heinrich Theodor Finely, born in Prussia in1814, who immigrated to Denmark in 1849. Ron has conducted the research for his five German ancestral lines as far back as 1714 using various repositories including the LDS Family History Center in West L.A. and the Horsens, Denmark government records office. He is seen here in front of the Cochem Castle on the Rhine River where he visited last December. So the term "novice" hardly applies!
The goal of the German Interest Group is to provide a wide range of resources both inside and outside the SCGS Library to help trace German families. For more information, please contact Allene Aubertin
