from Dick Humphrey, leader of the FTM User Group.
Finding Your ‘Place’ in Family Tree Maker
Place names are an important part of identifying facts
and events. How good is it knowing that grand papa was a farmer without
understanding whether it was on the Kansas plains or in the Appalachian hill
country or in rural Scotland. It makes a difference! Family Tree Maker, like all genealogy apps, makes
provision to record place names for all facts linked to individuals. In return,
we want to know all the things that occurred at a given place or who lived in a
particular county over time.
The Feb 12 user group session will cover some of the
finer points of entering place names, the use of Fastfields to eliminate
spelling differences and greatly speed up data entry. “Resolved” places in FTM
can be displayed hierarchically with sublevels – like computer folders and
their subfolders – making it possible to easily list everything in a county,
state or even a country. The special Place Detail field allows street addresses
and cemetery names to appear under the town and city names where they occur.
Join us – to become acquainted with these FTM features or to clear away some of
the cobwebs about data entry with place names.
User group leader, Dick Humphrey, will be at the library
by 2:30 pm to chat and provide FTM assistance.
