Looking for a place to learn more about genealogy and how to do family research? Lunch & Learn is simply the best place to do just that. Free and open to the public, it is one of the SCGS's most popular educational programs.
Starting with our January 2022 Lunch and Learn our lectures are now hybrid. Some lectures will be in our library and some lectures will be online. Both lectures will be available to in-library attendees and online attendees. Please check our website and lecture flyer for more details. Topic: 1:00 to 2:00 pm: “A Melungeon Celebration: Surnames, Geography, Culture and Lore of the Melungeon People” Presented by Stephanie Rose Bird
Stephanie Rose Bird is the author of seven books including, “Light, Bright, and Damned Near White: Biracial and Triracial Culture in America and Beyond,” and the soon-to-be-released “Spirits in my Bones: Ancestry Magick for Body & Soul.” She has had a longstanding interest in DNA Ancestry, Genealogy, and Anthropology. Bird is a life-long educator and her work revolves around the arts and culture. In this lecture, discusses the rich heritage of the multiracial Melungeon People. Topic: 2:15 to 3:30 p.m. "The Quakers Are Our Friends!" Presented by Diana Crisman Smith
The Quaker movement came to America early in the colonial period and is still active. Their records provide a wonderful source for information about the lives of the individuals. We’ll look at the unique features, understanding what is recorded, and where they may be found. Diana Crisman Smith has been researching since childhood and has been active as a researcher, speaker, writer and teacher for over 30 years. She has enjoyed speaking at conferences around the country (and at sea) and is currently enjoying “traveling” through virtual presentations.
