The BIFHS-USA Interest Group promotes and encourages interest in family history, particularly relating to ancestry in England, Ireland, Scotland, Wales, the Channel Islands, and the Isle of Man. We educate and encourage others in British Isles family history through research assistance, a variety of resources and a community in order to facilitate the acquisition and exchange of family history research information.
Everyone with an interest is welcome to participate!
Both the British Isles and Irish Interest Groups are pleased to present a lecture that is of interest to both groups. This date is the reserved British Isles meeting date. There will be an Open Meeting for Questions on any Irish issues on the following Sunday. Please see Irish Interest Workshop article for those details.
Grosse Ile, Quebec ,Canada presented by Suzy Goulet
Grosse Ile is an island in the St. Lawrence River. This immigration depot opened in 1832 until 1937 and served as a quarantine station to protect Quebec City from epidemics. Thousands of Irish immigrants arrived in Canada from 1845-1849, coming to escape the Great Hunger. It is believed to be the largest burial ground for refugees of the Great Hunger outside of Ireland. It is estimated that almost 500,000 Irish immigrants passed through Grosse Ile on the way to their final destinations in Canada and the United States.
Ellis Island in New York was modeled after Grosse Ile.
