[CA-SCGS] SCGS German Interest Group Meeting - Saturday, March 19, 2016

Are you interested in meeting other researchers working on their German family histories? The SCGS German Interest Group would be a great place to start. Their next meeting will be on Saturday, March 19, 2016 from 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm at the SCGS Library in Burbank.

This month's meeting will feature group member Walt Sturrock presenting "How to Scan and Restore Old Photos." Participants are encouraged to bring a favorite old photo that may have some damage and Walt will select a few to work on as part of his demonstration.

The group favorites, Edward McKelvey presenting "Common German Words" and Walt Sturrock providing another lesson in reading Old German Gothic Script, will also be included.

The group member of the month is Marian McHale.
Marian Michel McHale has been a popular member of the German Interest Group for many years. She fondly remembers spending many summer vacations visiting with family in Decatur, Illinois. The stories and family history that her aunt told her during these visits gave Marian the great pleasure of experiencing first hand the lives of her Decatur families and she eventually succumbed to the genealogy bug. Why the Michel family immigrated from Germany to Decatur is unknown, but Marian's sleuthing in that one main city has lead to the discovery of more connections among her various family lines including Platzbecker, Scherer, Goehring, and Boesdoerfer, in addition to Michel. Her current brick wall is grandfather Henry Michel, a sausage maker from Zittau who continued in that trade in Decatur. His parents' names were Karl and Helena, but details of his immigration, naturalization, and family in Zittau remain a mystery. One that Marian is determined to solve.

The goal of the SCGS German Interest Group is to provide a wide range of resources both inside and outside the SCGS Library to help trace German families. They often have a speaker on German research and the group is happy to offer assistance with your German research problems. New members and guests are always welcome.
