Walt Sturrock presents Part II of "The Life And Times Of Henry Pascale"

Walt Sturrock is a professional artist and photographer.
His love of history, photo restoration, and family research brought him to SCGS and its German Interest group several years ago.  There Walt found support and guidance for researching his German roots as he learned to read and translate old German Gothic Script documents.  As a result, he has been able to trace his German roots back to the 1600's.

The goal of the SCGS German Interest Group is to provide a wide range of resources both inside and outside the SCGS Library to help trace German families. Throughout 2017, our German Group will renew its "Routing Our Roots" as well as present short programs on German Exiles in Los Angeles County, History of German Towns, Human Interest Stories on folks of German Heritage, learning German Words and Old German Script, plus any last minute thoughts.

German Interest Group

Researching your family tree and finding new, exciting, and sometimes surprising family connections?

Want to learn more about the German exiles? Come to our October 20th meeting to hear Jana's presentation on German exile  'Arnold Schoenberg'

Jana began researching her ancestral family in 1971, when her aunts told her she was related to a famous Indian fighter, Lewis Wetzel, the hero of Zane Grey's "Spirit of the Border". Hours of research later, proved that Lewis' brother, Jacob, was her direct ancestor. Later, in the 1980's, with the help of Elizabeth Sharp from the Immigrant Library, she traced her Bickel ancestry to Graben, Baden, Germany. Jana sent a letter to all seven Bickels in Graben and got a response from two Bickel's and the town historian, Berthold Heil, who privided her with her direct ancestors based on church records. The family story was that Jana's ancestor, John Fredrick Bickel stowed away on a boat to America with his brother, leaving Germany to avoid the draft and ended up fighting in the Civil war.  Mr. Heil explained that it was a cousin, not a brother, who went with John Fredrick Bickel to America. J.F. had already completed his military service in Baden. His service in the civil war was covered during her talk on 'German's in Missouri'.  Jana doubts that J.F. stowed away on a boat to America. It makes a nice story but she doesn't see how it would be possible. Jana recently purchased a town history on Graben. It is, of course, in German, so her next project is to get at least some of it translated. Jana hopes to someday visit Graben.

[CA--SCGS] German Interest Group Meeting, Saturday, July 21, 2018

German Interest Group

Researching your family tree and finding new, exciting, and sometimes surprising family connections?

Join the SCGS German Interest Group at their next meeting to be held from 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm on Saturday, July 21, 2018, at the SCGS Family Research Library. You will not want to  miss Chris Green's DNA presentation as she shares with the German Interest Group how she solved three cases using DNA!

Following in my aunt's footsteps, I've been doing genelogy research for over 20 years. All of my ancestors were German speaking and arrived in the US between 1818 and 1907. Some lines, Wildy, Markwalter and Von Sprecken, have been well studied but I still know little of the Kunze, Bumb, Hohenzollern, Denninger, Nuernberger, Haupt, Erdmann, and Hager.

I took my first DNA test in 2012 and fell in love with genetic genealogy. DNA Day at the 2013 Burbank Jamboree taught me new ways to use results and by 2014, I was using these methods to solve unknown parentage cases. I also volunteer as an administrator in the DNA Detectives Facebook Group. My presentation will take you through solving three cases: an adoptee and two DNA surprises

The goal of the SCGS German Interest Group is to provide a wide range of resources both inside and outside the SCGS Library to help trace German families. Throughout 2018, our German Group will renew its "Routing Our Roots" as well as present short programs on German Exiles in Los Angeles County, History of German Towns, Human Interest Stories on folks of German Heritage, learning German Words and Old German Script, plus any last minute thoughts.

Our Speaker this month: Janine Pizano
18th Century Palatine Migration: Rheinland-Pfalz to Tulpehocken, PA
Janine Pizano’s interest in genealogy began in the ‘90’s when her mother delved into her own parent's Italian immigration story which took place at the turn of the 20th century, resulting in the book, “Jennie, My Mother”.   About five years ago, Janine began researching her father’s family history, and discovered that the origins of his family in this country go back as far as 1710, arriving with the wave of Palatines who immigrated from the Rhineland to New York, and ultimately settling in the present-day Berks and Lancaster Counties in Pennsylvania.  Janine's family surnames include Leto, Sicco, Benzio, Persoglio, and Sovera on her Italian side, and Smith/Schmidt, Witman, Zern, Rühl, and Wenrich on her Pennsylvania Deutsch side.
