[CA-SCGS] German Interest Group Oktoberfest Celebration! - Saturday, October 15, 2016

The SCGS German Interest Group will hold their annual Oktoberfest celebration on October 15, 2016 from 12:00 noon to 4:00 pm at the SCGS Library in Burbank. The popular potluck will feature special German dishes prepared by the attendees as well as typical American favorites. Bring your favorite to share with the group.

The luncheon will be followed by the regular group meeting.

Popular group member, Winnie Long, shown here checking out her natal town of Klinga on a 1933 map of Prussia, will follow up on her April presentation "Growing up in Germany."

"Growing up in Germany - Part 2"

Winnie was born Winifred Eva Charlotte Broedel in 1933. As a young child she moved with her parents to Naunhof and as a young adult she studied nursing in Leipzig. Her career took her to Berlin where she found work in a hospital. But, before long, the Berlin Wall was erected and Winnie found herself on the Eastern side. Luckily, she was able to get out of East Berlin with the help of her aunt who lived in Hannover. In April 1966 Winnie met the man who was to become the love of her life on a blind date. She married Billy Jack Long, an American, in July that same year and relocated to Long Beach, California where the happy couple lived before moving to Westminster. Winnie has an older sister and a younger sister, both of whom still live in Germany.

The goal of the German Interest Group is to provide a wide range of resources both inside and outside the SCGS Library to help trace German families. For more information, please contact Allene Aubertin
