Our Speaker this month: Janine Pizano

18th Century Palatine Migration: Rheinland-Pfalz to Tulpehocken, PA

Janine Pizano’s interest in genealogy began in the ‘90’s when her mother delved into her own parent's Italian immigration story which took place at the turn of the 20^th century, resulting in the book, “Jennie, My Mother”.   About five years ago, Janine began researching her father’s family history, and discovered that the origins of his family in this country go back as far as 1710, arriving with the wave of Palatines who immigrated from the Rhineland to New York, and ultimately settling in the present-day Berks and Lancaster Counties in Pennsylvania.  Janine's family surnames include Leto, Sicco, Benzio, Persoglio, and Sovera on her Italian side, and Smith/Schmidt, Witman, Zern, Rühl, and Wenrich on her Pennsylvania Deutsch side.

The goal of the SCGS German Interest Group is to provide a wide range of resources both inside and outside the SCGS Library to help trace German families. Throughout 2017, our German Group will renew its "Routing Our Roots" as well as present short programs on German Exiles in Los Angeles County, History of German Towns, Human Interest Stories on folks of German Heritage, learning German Words and Old German Script, plus any last minute thoughts.
