DNA Interest
Group Meeting – 10:00 a.m. – 2:00
p.m. at the SCGS Library
Sunday, January 27, 2019 – DNA Uses in Pedigree Building
Kathy
Johnston will review the basic science used in genetic genealogy including the
measure of “distance” in centimorgans and how to estimate cousinship using
autosomal DNA. She will explain how autosomal information from the four main
genetic genealogy companies along with free GEDmatch comparisons can be used to
maximize cousin matches. Matches in common can be used to identify clusters of
descendants from a common ancestor or ancestral couple. The addition of
collateral lines to your family tree can help you and your DNA cousins break
through brick walls when you work together. Find out why law enforcement is so
eager to learn these genetic genealogy techniques to solve cold cases.
Speaker: Kathy Johnston, M.D. is a retired
dermatologist who has been actively researching her family tree for over 27
years. She is one of the administrators for the SCGS DNA Interest Group (DIG)
and has been involved in genetic genealogy research for 14 years.
