Scroll  below to the third workshop for for details!

This week's topics are:

Kalani Mondoy will speak on “Filipino Genealogy Research”.

According to the 2010 census, the Asian population grew faster than any other race         group over the last decade and counted 3.4 million Filipinos.  With the popularity of DNA testing encouraging people to find out about their ancestral background, Filipinos are left wondering how would they find out about their ancestors. Either being the immigrant or having recent immigrant ancestors who have not had a long history in the U.S.A. is a challenge. Learn what is necessary to do research in the Philippines, what to expect, and what type of records are easily accessible and are the most useful.

Kalani Mondoy started genealogy 30 years ago after having a family reunion that left questionable origins of his Filipino grandparents. Although most of his time is spent using DNA to help make genealogical connections, he continues to lend his expertise in specific areas involving genealogy research. Helping adoptees of Filipino and Polynesian descent, explaining to others what their DNA results mean and how to research their ancestors, and working on translations from old Hawaiian and Portuguese language newspapers.

The Chinese American Museum curator Hannah Yang will speak on “Find Out What Is At The Asian Pacific Resource Center For You”

The Asian Pacific Resource Center (APRC) established in 1979, is a special collection of the LA County Library located in the Rosemead Library. The collection is on the Asian American/Pacific Islander American experience, with core holdings on the history, art, and culture.

Katrina Lacerna is the Asian Pacific Resource Center Librarian.

***Special bonus workshop--2:30 to 4:30 pm***

Hannah Yang and Janelle Sangalang will speak on the “Chinese American Museum’s Family History Workshop”

This workshop will explore family activities that encourage recording and interpreting family histories through intergenerational exchange. The instructors will provide a brief introduction about the museum and discuss how to facilitate your own family history. All materials will be provided; participants will receive a copy of the museum’s publication “Family History Scrapbook,” which features twelve engaging activities.Hannah Yang is the Associate Curator of the Chinese American Museum. Janelle Sangalang is the Coordinator of Education and Programs at the Chinese American Museum

Sunday, January 27, 2019 – DNA Uses in Pedigree Building

Kathy Johnston will review the basic science used in genetic genealogy including the measure of “distance” in centimorgans and how to estimate cousinship using autosomal DNA. She will explain how autosomal information from the four main genetic genealogy companies along with free GEDmatch comparisons can be used to maximize cousin matches. Matches in common can be used to identify clusters of descendants from a common ancestor or ancestral couple. The addition of collateral lines to your family tree can help you and your DNA cousins break through brick walls when you work together. Find out why law enforcement is so eager to learn these genetic genealogy techniques to solve cold cases.

Speaker: Kathy Johnston, M.D. is a retired dermatologist who has been actively researching her family tree for over 27 years. She is one of the administrators for the SCGS DNA Interest Group (DIG) and has been involved in genetic genealogy research for 14 years.
