The Back to the Future Research Trips are designed to acquaint you with the times of your ancestors. We’ll be visiting various historical venues throughout the Southern California area. Tours are free unless noted. You will need to arrange your own transportation.

Parking
Parking for the Museum is located around the rose garden. Please park your car head first into the spaces around the rose garden only. Parking is not permitted in front of the 2-story retirement home. For special events, parking will be on the lower grounds and the upper grounds will be reserved for handicapped parking.

[CA-SCGS] Lunch and Learn - Back to the Future Tour in Los Angeles March 26, 2016

The Back to the Future Research Trips will take you back to the times of our ancestors.  We will be visiting various historical venues throughout the Southern California area. Most trips are free. You will need to arrange your own transportation.

Meet at 10:45 p.m. at the Visitors Center Las Angelitas del Pueblo

This will be a three-venue trip. Las Angelitas del Pueblo offers free walking tours of El Pueblo de Los Angeles Historical Monument, home to the Pico House, Olvera Street, the Avila Adobe and other fascinating remnants of our city’s past.

We will start by meeting at the to Las Angelitas del Pueblo office located next to the Old Plaza Firehouse on the southeast end of the Plaza at 10:45 a.m.  Bring water and wear sensible shoes for walking.

Admission is free.

[CA-SCGS] Port of Los Angeles Archives is in Danger

 The Port of Los Angeles Archives Needs Your Help.

In 2010, the Port of Los Angeles began an important program of identifying, processing, and preserving approximately 25,000 linear feet of historical materials. This historic resource is now in jeopardy. After being moved out of their climate controlled building earlier this year to an open warehouse storage facility near the water, the Archives are endangered due to high humidity and vermin infestation.

As researchers with interests in California, and especially in Los Angeles, we all need to be aware of the crisis facing these records.

[CA-SCGS] SCGS to Participate in LA Heritage Day Sunday, 27 April

On Sunday, April 27, 2014, from 11am to 4pm, the L.A. Heritage Alliance will host the sixth Annual L.A. Heritage Day to share Los Angeles and Southern California’s history through tours, free museums, children’s activities, presentations, food, and more. The entire event and all activities are free and will take place at the birthplace of Los Angeles, adjacent to world-famous Olvera Street inside the Pico House making for a full day of history, food, and fun.

Charlotte Bocage, SCGS Education Committee Chair, will be joined by SCGS president Dave Burde and vice president Jay Holladay to staff the SCGS booth. They will be doing free look-ups in the 1940 Census and encouraging everyone to attend beginning genealogy class during JamboFREE on Friday, June 6, 2014 in Burbank.
