THE STARS IN OUR AMERICAN FAMILIES:
AN AFRICAN AMERICAN PERSPECTIVE

Jamboree's Keynote Speaker

LaBrenda Garrett-Nelson, JD, LLM, CG®, CGL℠

LaBrenda Garrett-Nelson, JD, LLM, CG®, CGL℠, is a trustee and President of the Board for Certification of Genealogists. She earned a BA from John Jay College of Criminal Justice, City University of New York, and a Law degree and a Master of Laws degree from the New York University School of Law. After working as a corporate tax attorney for thirty-five years, she retired from a partner-level position at Ernst & Young in 2013 and turned her attention to her longtime avocation of Genealogy.

Beginning with the disregard of African American family histories as the exemplar, the Keynote will explore the ways in which the field of genealogy has aided in the exclusion of marginalized groups in the past, but is now poised to play a leading role in helping our nation forge a future that acknowledges the contributions of all ethnicities and communities.
