Selected Presentations will be then pre-recorded during the first half of 2022 and shown during the conference weekends until October 31, 2022. Only speakers who are selected for the Live Q&A for the presentations shown on the Saturdays need to be present during their time.

Adrian Foushee Honors His Paternal Grandfather  

Jeff Foushee

His occupations included farmer, mine worker, sawmill laborer, mechanic, restauranteur, and policeman. Born April 1, 1888, near  Glendon, Moore County, North Carolina, Jeff Foushee farmed throughout his life, vegetables, chickens, and hogs, for subsistence and also commercially. In 1909, he married, Mattie Dorsett, his uncle’s niece. Together for 23 years, they had ten children. Miner was listed as the 1920 census occupation. Coal and industrial minerals had been profitably mined, but it was waning by this time. By 1930, the family had moved across the northern county line into Chatham County. In 1933, Mattie died in Gulf Township, Chatham County due to a pulmonary event.  By 1935, Jeff relocated the family farther north to Orange County, North Carolina. 

 Living in Carrboro, next to the college town of Chapel Hill, there were more opportunities. It’s not clear which job came first, car mechanic at the Strowd Motor Company Garage or laboring in the local lumber yards (something he would be followed into by three sons). On October 8, 1938, Jeff remarried, to Mary (Gunn) Barnett (her second marriage also), however, on the 28 of November, she passed due to apoplexy (a stroke). Also, it’s not clear if Jeff opened his café before or after Mary’s death, but he and his children would manage it into the 1960s. Jeff remained single for over 20 years, marrying one more time, to Ella Mae Hartman, who being 24 years younger, survived him. 

Jeff’s most notable occupation would be policeman. Standing over six feet and weighing over 225 pounds, in 1949, at the age of 61, Jeff Foushee and Nathaniel “Bud” Hopkins became the first African-American officers of Orange County. They were hired as part-time patrolmen only, on duty from 7:30 to 11pm, to “handle the tough, unpredictable Negro section of Carrboro where even the bravest men fear to tread”. Both were temporarily deputized in prior unrests. After the race-riot of August 1937, a report included a recommendation for the hiring of Negro police. And, although the county hired one additional officer within one year, it was 12 years before the Board of Alderman approved the hire of Negroes. It was said Foushee and Hopkins were respected men in both the Negro and White communities. Even so, they were only to patrol the Negro communities and could only detain a person if they were also Negro. It’s said that the area was so segregated that when a motorist stopped for directions, the officers could not assist, as they were not familiar with the White neighborhoods. 

My grandfather died on September 20, 1966, two days after my second birthday. I have no personal memories of him, but I have stories about him, not just from family but those from family friends and neighbors speaking of his resolution, strength, and kindness.

Instructions for Authors :

All you have to do is submit your story for The Stars in Your Family book. Submissions must be in MS Word and emailed to starsinyourfamily@scgsgenealogy.com from February 1, 2021 through March 15, 2021. After the book is edited by SCGS member Kay Adkins, it will be available from Amazon.com by June and announced on the SCGS blog and website. 

Write a biography of one of The Stars in Your Family. 

• Submitters do not need to be members of the Southern California Genealogical Society or registered to attend either the Genetic Genealogy or the Jamboree conferences. 

• Submitters are limited to two entries each. 

• The document must be in MS Word. 

• The maximum word count is 600 words for each submission. The title should be the subject’s name. If the subject is deceased, be sure to include the subject’s birth and death date. 

• A photograph or drawing of the biography’s subject may also be submitted. Be sure to title it with the subject’s name. 

• The editor has the right to edit the document for fit and clarity.

• The articles included in the book will be on a first-come, first-served basis. 

• Submission of articles will be to starsinyourfamily@scgsgenealogy.com. 

• Submissions are accepted from February 1, 2021, through March 15, 2021.

The Southern California Genealogical Society [SCGS] announces its Call for Presentations for its 2021 VIRTUAL conferences and events. This Call pertains to the Genetic Genealogy, Jamboree, and Webinar Series Programs. Presentations will only be accepted through the online portal September 1, 2020 - September 30, 2020. 

Submissions of Presentations: Speakers interested in presenting lectures or webinars for 2021 must submit their proposals through the Jamboree Speaker Portal at genealogyjamboree.com 

Only those presentations submitted through the portal will be considered. The submission process ensures that correct speaker information is used in communication, advertising, and conference materials. 

SCGS Jamboree draws attendees of all experience levels from first timers to conference veterans. The Jamboree Extension Series attracts an international audience comprised of all skill levels. We encourage the submissions of all levels of lectures; all topics will be considered. New presentations are encouraged. Presentations may include the following topics: 

• African Diaspora

• Australia, New Zealand and Oceania 
• British Isles & Ireland
• Canada
• DNA 
• Eastern Europe 
• French Diaspora 
• General Genealogy Techniques 
• Latinx • Military 
• Native and First Peoples

Number of Presentations: Speakers may submit up to 6 presentations. The SCGS Jamboree Committee, at its sole discretion, may select none, some, or all of the presentations submitted by any speaker. 

Session Length: Jamboree and Genetic Genealogy pre-recorded presentations are 50 minutes long. Jamboree Extension Series Webinars are to be 60 minutes with an additional 30 minutes for questions.

2016 SCGS Jamboree Extension Series Webinars Announced!

The Southern California Genealogical Society is proud to announce the 2016 schedule for the highly acclaimed, free Jamboree Extension Series Webinar program. SCGS offers an international online audience of genealogists and family historians educational webinars twice a month.

The 2016 series begins Saturday, January 2nd at 10:00 a.m. PST. This year's speakers include Thomas W. Jones, Ph.D., CG, CGL, FASG, FUGA, FNGS; Diahan Southard; Gena Philibert-Ortega; Jean Wilcox Hibben, Ph.D., MA, CG; Dr. Michael Lacopo; Cyndi Ingle and many others presenting on a broad range of topics.

Whether you are a budding genealogist or a seasoned professional, the webinars offer a wide range of topics to build your skills. The Jamboree Extension Series has helped to fulfill the SCGS mission to "foster interest in family history and genealogy, preserve genealogical materials, and provide instruction in accepted and effective research techniques" since its inception in 2011.

All SCGS webinars are open to the public and free to attend. Webinars are offered the first Saturday (10:00 a.m. Pacific time) and third Wednesday (6:00 p.m. Pacific time) of each month.

Speakers! It's not too late to submit proposals to present at the Southern California Genealogy Jamboree, The Future of the Past: Genetic Genealogy 2016, and the 2016 SCGS Extension Series of Webinars.

The deadline is this Wednesday, October 7!

The 47^th Annual Southern California Genealogy Jamboree will be held Friday through Sunday, June 3-5, 2016 at the Los Angeles Marriott Burbank Airport Hotel, Burbank, California. The pre-conference day on Thursday, June 2, 2016 will include a full day of DNA presentations and in-depth workshops.

This call also includes the 2016 Jamboree Extension Series.

Presentations will only be accepted through the Jamboree Speaker Portal through October 7, 2015.

47^th Annual Southern California Genealogy Jamboree 

Jamboree Extension Series Webinars

The Southern California Genealogical Society announces the extension of the Call for Presentations for the 47^th Annual Southern California Genealogy Jamboree, to be held Friday through Sunday, June 3-5, 2016 at the Los Angeles Marriott Burbank Airport Hotel, Burbank, California. The pre-conference day on Thursday, June 2, 2016 will include a full day of DNA presentations and in-depth workshops. This call also includes the 2016 Jamboree Extension Series webinar program. Presentations will only be accepted through the online portal through October 7, 2015.

The 2016 Jamboree theme is "Giving to the Future by Preserving the Past" and the theme for the pre-conference DNA day is "The Future of the Past: Genetic Genealogy 2016." Submissions utilizing our theme and promoting the expansion of knowledge and skills are welcome. Our heritage focus is on German and Eastern European ancestry. Presentations on all topics will be considered, but new presentations are encouraged.

Speakers interested in presenting lecture presentations or workshops for 2016 must submit their proposals though the Jamboree Speaker Portal by October 7, 2015.

SCGS Announces 2015 Webinar Series - GROW what you KNOW

The Southern California Genealogical Society proudly announces plans for the 2015  Jamboree Extension Webinar Series. Since 2011, SCGS has offered twice-monthly webinars for genealogists and family historians around the globe.

The goal of the Webinar Series is to fulfill an important element of the Society’s Mission Statement: The Southern California Genealogical Society exists to foster interest in family history and genealogy, preserve genealogical materials, and provide instruction in accepted and effective research techniques.

What does it cost?
The live webcasts are open to the public free of charge. Please tell your cousins, fellow genealogical society members and others about our program. We'd love to have them join us.

When are they held?
SCGS webinars are held the first Saturday and third Wednesday of each month. They are held at hours that most people are not working: Saturday 10am Pacific time and Wednesday 6pm Pacific time.

I’m sold. How do I sign up?
It’s really easy. Go to the SCGS website page with the Extension Series information. http://tinyurl.com/2015-SCGS-Webinars

You’ll see a list with all of the upcoming webinars and links to register. Click on the links to register for the live webcasts you want to attend. Fill out the registration information and you’re all set. You’ll get a confirmation email and will also get reminders before the webinar, as well as a link to a handout for every presentation.

On the day of the program, click the link that you received in those emails and you’ll be taken to GoToWebinar for your session. You can watch the webinars on your laptop or desktop, on your tablet or even your smartphone. If you don't have an internet connection, you can even dial in by phone and listen to the presentation.

What if I can’t watch the live webcast?
As a benefit of membership, SCGS members may view any of the 125 or so archived sessions any time, day or night, on the SCGS website. Webinars are posted online about two weeks after the webcast.
