In our own geographic area, we can offer clients information on the vital areas of birth, death and marriage, plus newspaper obituaries. We also have extensive records of people coming to the California Gold Rush, their names being on ship records, overland wagon train lists, and the newspapers of the day. SCGS also produced an 1852 census for the new State of California.

    United States Research
Our collection has materials for almost every county in the United States. This makes our library, and its research team, well positioned to conduct studies on your ancestors as they migrated to and around this country.
    • Revolutionary War Ancestors - if your ancestor was born before 1765 there is a strong possibility that he served in the Revolutionary War.

    • American Colonial Wars - Thousands of Americans from Maine to South Carolina fought in the many Colonial Wars from the Pequot War in 1637 to the French & Indian Wars ending in 1762.

    • Massachusetts Town Records – Vital Records listing births, marriages & deaths have been compiled for most of the towns of Massachusetts up to 1850.  SCGS has over 200 of these town records.

    • California Gold Rush - Our records include the names of peoples coming overland and by ship; many names were recorded in the newspapers of the day.  In addition to the 1850 and 1860 U.S. Censuses, we have the California Census for 1852.

    • Los Angeles County Records searches – births, marriages, deaths in Los Angeles County and California; newspaper obituaries.

    • Personalized research - we are prepared to help you knock down those block walls.  Tell us about your research puzzles and we will attempt to help you solve them.
    Cornish Records Search
SCGS has one of the great collections of Cornish ancestry records, many of which go back to the 1500s. These records include the celebrated Ross Collection of births, marriages, deaths and other official records of Government and Church in Cornwall. A search can also be made of the Cornish miners of California and Michigan and other areas where Cornish people were involved.

    French-Canadian Research
We are the home of the French-Canadian Heritage Society of California and one of the largest collections of French-Canadian resources in the USA. Our researchers will search the Blue and Red Drouin, Jette, Tanguay, PRDH, and the marriage records of the 1000 parishes, and the many other FC resources we have to help you document your ancestry.

[CA-SCGS] The Searcher: Changes in the Delivery of the Searcher

    The Searcher
Changes in the Delivery of the Searcher

Membership Renewal starting 2019 with Extra Charge for Printed and Mailed Searcher

As printing and postage costs have risen, many genealogical societies no longer print their magazines.  While a number of our members have switched to a digital, rather than a printed The Searcher, most members are still receiving a printed issue.

As of January 2019, when a member renews their membership, their dues will remain at the same level as in 2018, but there will be a $10 surcharge per year for the printed and mailed The Searcher.

All members will still be able to access The Searcher by logging into their account and clicking on the button Members-Only Resources.

SCGS Announces 2015 Webinar Series - GROW what you KNOW

Click here to view the schedule
The Southern California Genealogical Society proudly announces plans for the 2015  Jamboree Extension Webinar Series. Since 2011, SCGS has offered twice-monthly webinars for genealogists and family historians around the globe.

The goal of the Webinar Series is to fulfill an important element of the Society’s Mission Statement: The Southern California Genealogical Society exists to foster interest in family history and genealogy, preserve genealogical materials, and provide instruction in accepted and effective research techniques.

    What does it cost?
The live webcasts are open to the public free of charge. Please tell your cousins, fellow genealogical society members and others about our program. We'd love to have them join us.

    When are they held?
SCGS webinars are held the first Saturday and third Wednesday of each month. They are held at hours that most people are not working: Saturday 10am Pacific time and Wednesday 6pm Pacific time.

I’m sold. How do I sign up?
It’s really easy. Go to the SCGS website page with the Extension Series information. http://tinyurl.com/2015-SCGS-Webinars

You’ll see a list with all of the upcoming webinars and links to register. Click on the links to register for the live webcasts you want to attend. Fill out the registration information and you’re all set. You’ll get a confirmation email and will also get reminders before the webinar, as well as a link to a handout for every presentation.

On the day of the program, click the link that you received in those emails and you’ll be taken to GoToWebinar for your session. You can watch the webinars on your laptop or desktop, on your tablet or even your smartphone. If you don't have an internet connection, you can even dial in by phone and listen to the presentation.

What if I can’t watch the live webcast?
As a benefit of membership, SCGS members may view any of the 125 or so archived sessions any time, day or night, on the SCGS website. Webinars are posted online about two weeks after the webcast. A list of the archived sessions can be found on the SCGS website. To learn more about the valuable membership benefits available for SCGS members, visit our membership webpage.

Download the 2015 Webinar flyer and post it on your office's bulletin board.

Join us for the first session on Saturday, January 3!

    Nearly A Million...

I've always enjoyed watching the car odometer turn over to some magic number, whether it was all 6's or 123123 or some Big-Zero number.

We're coming up on a million page loads on the SCGS website. Since the counter was installed on 1 April 2005, we've had nearly a million page views. That's pretty darned good for a home-built website. We will probably cross the line later this week.  I'll let you know when we hit our million, give or take a few.

If you want to help make the numbers move, visit the website at www.scgsgenealogy.com.

Thanks to everyone for your support.
