[CA-SCGS] Preserve the Pensions Project Update

In 2015, SCGS took up the challenge issued by the Federation of Genealogical Societies (FGS) to create a matching program for donations to the Preserve the Pensions project. The SCGS Board of Directors voted to match, on a dollar-for-dollar basis, the first $2,500 of donations made by SCGS members, Jamboree guests, and others in support of the monumental task of digitizing 7.2 million pages of pension records.

Your generous donations, along with the SCGS pledge, contributed over $6,700 to the FGS campaign, ensuring the digitization and preservation of thousands of pages of pension files. Thanks to your generosity, images of important genealogical and historical significance will be preserved for future generations.

The Federation of Genealogical Societies recently announced the exciting news that the $2 million dollar mark was surpassed in 2015 with the generous support of donors like you. Please take a moment to read more about the project on the FGS Voice Blog.

With our sincere gratitude for your support,

The Board of Directors

[CA-SCGS] SCGS Steps Up to Preserve the Pensions

The Southern California Genealogical Society has Stepped Up to the Challenge!

What challenge, you ask?

The Challenge to PRESERVE the PENSIONS

The Federation of Genealogical Societies (FGS) issued a challenge to all of its member societies to create a matching program for donations to the Preserve the Pensions project. The fund financially supports the digitization of pension records from the War of 1812.

In support of the monumental task of digitizing 7.2 million pages of records, the SCGS Board of Directors has voted to match, on a dollar-for-dollar basis, the first $2,500 of donations made by SCGS members, Jamboree guests, and others through December 31, 2015.

Let's take a look at the effect of a $50 donation made through SCGS.
Your donation = $50
SCGS Match = $50 + $50 = $100
FGS will Match the combined amount =  $100 + $100 = $200
Ancestry will Match the combined amount =  $200 + $200 = $400!

Your contributions can be made in the name of your ancestor.

Time is of the essence. These documents are fragile and need to be digitized quickly to preserve the best possible image of each page.

You can donate by credit card through the SCGS Website, by sending your check to SCGS (be sure to indicate "Preserve the Pensions" in the notes area),  or through PayPal (Please note on your donation that it is for Preserve the Pensions - SCGS).

We appreciate that some of our members may prefer to support SCGS by contributing time and talent instead of (or in addition to) treasure. We are so very grateful for those contributions too. If you are looking to share your knowledge and life experience, please contact Mary Daly at volunteer@scgsgenealogy.com.

With our profound gratitude for your continued support,

The Board of Directors
Southern California Genealogical Society

[CA-SCGS] Family Tree Maker User Group meeting, January 11, 2015

from Dick Humphrey, leader of the FTM User Group.

New Updates to Family Tree Maker 2014

In November and December Ancestry released two free updates (“service packs”, SP4 and SP5) for Family Tree Maker 2014.

On Sunday, January 11, we will focus on these updates. Starting with a careful look at how to check for an available update and how to determine what version you currently have, we will then step through the download and installation processes for the updates.

Each feature change will be examined, including one completely new report and a new feature to assist with telephone support calls to Ancestry. A number of reports have been enhanced and there is one pretty cool navigation improvement!

[CA-SCGS] FTM User Group Notice for January 12, 2014

Post from Dick Humphrey
Family Tree Maker Software User Group – Meeting Notice, January 12, 2014

Can one FTM tree be split into separate trees without extreme tediousness?  YES, absolutely! Come and learn how to do this!

TREE OPERATIONS USING FAMILY TREE MAKER
  • Is there a difference between private facts and notes and privatizing an entire tree?
  • Back-up strategies and restore procedures. How does auto-backup work?
  • What’s the difference between exporting a tree (or part of one) to FTM, GEDCOM or Ancestry?
  • How can I merge two FTM trees together – and why would I want to do so?
The meeting is open to the public; attendees do not need to be members of SCGS.
