[CA--SCGS] Be An Inspiration for Education, Preservation, and Genealogy Research--Donate to the Century Club Today!

Dear SCGS Members and Family History Friends,

Your contributions matter!

Isn’t it great to be able to attend interest group meetings online, research our subscription databases remotely, and find more of our books available remotely through our catalog? Covid-19 has forced many changes upon all of us and is driving many improvements for our members who do not live close to the library. Thanks to your generous donations, we have been able to implement these many changes to our services.

Our donation campaign for 2022 starts November 1.  As you may be aware, it is possible that the library will be moving to a new location before our lease is up in November 2022. It will take a lot of extra cash to pay for moving fees and building out the new location to meet our needs. Any donation you can make to the general fund at this time will make the process that much easier. If you live too far away to visit, you can order Research Assistance through www.scgsgenealogy.com/research/research-team.html.

All research is handled through emails and payment is through the shopping cart.

THREE WAYS TO GIVE:

1)      Online at https://next.SCGSgenealogy.com/donate/ to pay by Credit Card, PayPal or print and mail

2)      SCGS Facebook page (www.facebook.com/scgsgenealogy/): Click the Donate button to pay via PayPal

3)            3)   By Mail:  Send your check to: SCGS, 417 Irving Drive, Burbank, CA 91504

For more information on learning from home with Lunch and Learn and SCGS Interest Groups, or to hire help from our Research Team, email scgs@scgsgenealogy.com

On behalf of the SCGS Board and all our volunteers, please continue to stay safe.

And, for your support and consideration, we say “Thank You”!

[CA-SCGS] The California Mayflower Society donates updated “Silver Books” to the Southern California Genealogical Society

Guest post written by Erica Hahn
State Junior Membership Chair
California Mayflower Society

In honor of the excellent genealogical library maintained by the Southern California Genealogical Society and its continuing sponsorship of Jamboree, the largest genealogical conference in California, this November 2016, the California Mayflower Society made a major donation of 24 Silver Books.

SCGS Library acquisition lead Sally Emerson
examines the Silver Books in preparation
for inclusion in the Library.
Photo provided by Erica Hahn
The Silver Books are an ongoing project of the General Society of Mayflower Descendants, officially entitled “The Five Generations Project.” Since the books are silver in color, they are known as the Silver Books.

These are meticulously researched volumes documenting with primary sources, all the known descendants of passengers on the Mayflower ship for the first five generations. Although it is called the Five Generations Project, in reality since the children of the fifth generation are included it takes these families through six generations. They are regularly revised as new information becomes available.

The donation began when two members of the California Society, Marcia Maloney, the Deputy State Governor South, and Erica Hahn, the State Junior Membership Chair, did a presentation at SCGS in Oct 2016 on joining a lineage society. The two looked over the silver book collection in the library and noted that it was not fully up to date and lacked a number of the more recent volumes. They went back to the State Society which enthusiastically supported purchase of the volumes to bring the SCGS library up to date.

For researchers of New England ancestry, even if not Mayflower descendants, this information is a gold mine. For those pursuing a possibly Mayflower line the books are even more valuable, because this information is not on line. As a result of the donation, SCGS now has the most complete set of silver books in Southern California.

*****************************

SCGS sincerly thanks the California Mayflower Society for thier generous donation. For more information on the California Mayflower society, please visit their website at http://www.mayflowersociety.com/index.html. The Silver Books can be accessed at the SCGS Family Research Library in Burbank, California

[CA-SCGS] Preserve the Pensions Project Update

In 2015, SCGS took up the challenge issued by the Federation of Genealogical Societies (FGS) to create a matching program for donations to the Preserve the Pensions project. The SCGS Board of Directors voted to match, on a dollar-for-dollar basis, the first $2,500 of donations made by SCGS members, Jamboree guests, and others in support of the monumental task of digitizing 7.2 million pages of pension records.

Your generous donations, along with the SCGS pledge, contributed over $6,700 to the FGS campaign, ensuring the digitization and preservation of thousands of pages of pension files. Thanks to your generosity, images of important genealogical and historical significance will be preserved for future generations.

The Federation of Genealogical Societies recently announced the exciting news that the $2 million dollar mark was surpassed in 2015 with the generous support of donors like you. Please take a moment to read more about the project on the FGS Voice Blog.

[CA-SCGS] SCGS Steps Up to Preserve the Pensions

The Southern California Genealogical Society has Stepped Up to the Challenge!

What challenge, you ask?

The Challenge to PRESERVE the PENSIONS

The Federation of Genealogical Societies (FGS) issued a challenge to all of its member societies to create a matching program for donations to the Preserve the Pensions project. The fund financially supports the digitization of pension records from the War of 1812.

In support of the monumental task of digitizing 7.2 million pages of records, the SCGS Board of Directors has voted to match, on a dollar-for-dollar basis, the first $2,500 of donations made by SCGS members, Jamboree guests, and others through December 31, 2015.

Let's take a look at the effect of a $50 donation made through SCGS.
Your donation = $50
SCGS Match = $50 + $50 = $100
FGS will Match the combined amount =  $100 + $100 = $200
Ancestry will Match the combined amount =  $200 + $200 = $400!

Your contributions can be made in the name of your ancestor.

Time is of the essence. These documents are fragile and need to be digitized quickly to preserve the best possible image of each page.

You can donate by credit card through the SCGS Website, by sending your check to SCGS (be sure to indicate "Preserve the Pensions" in the notes area),  or through PayPal (Please note on your donation that it is for Preserve the Pensions - SCGS).

We appreciate that some of our members may prefer to support SCGS by contributing time and talent instead of (or in addition to) treasure. We are so very grateful for those contributions too. If you are looking to share your knowledge and life experience, please contact Mary Daly at volunteer@scgsgenealogy.com

[CA-SCGS] Annual Meeting Reminder

As we near the end of the year, the Board and members of the Southern California Genealogical Society send best wishes for the holidays.

Here are some last-minute reminders:

Plan to attend the annual meeting on Saturday, December 14. Meet the current and newly elected Board members; hear about the successes from 2013 and goals for 2014; and be the first to hear about plans for the 2014 Southern California Genealogy Jamboree.

Return your ballot for the 2014 Board of Directors by Thursday, December 12.

If you have any new or gently used items to donate to the silent auction that will be held after the Annual Meeting, please deliver them to the library by end of the day Friday.

While you're in the giving mood, think about bringing a gift to SCGS. Reams of paper, paper products such as paper towels, postage, office supplies, etc. Every little contribution helps.

If you are an online shopper, remember that SCGS earns a commission from sales on Amazon.com. You'll benefit the society while you give to your family and friends.

Finally, as you are considering the many organizations that are worthy of your donation dollars, please keep SCGS in mind. You can donate online or by PayPal. It's relatively painless, takes just a minute, and it will help us continue to provide service to genealogists in Southern California and across the globe.

See you at the Annual Meeting on Saturday!
