Volunteers are the heart of SCGS

It truly takes a village to support a non-profit, volunteer-run society. Without the dedication, hard work, and support of the wonderful group of people who serve as librarians, library operations, IT and website team members, facility maintenance, membership, order processing, research team members, special interest group leaders, Jamboree committee members, and board members, the Society would not be able to serve our members and the genealogical community or fulfill its mission.

Do you want to send special thanks to an SCGS volunteer who helped you find a missing ancestor?  Do you want to recognize an especially hard-working volunteer staff member for their continuing service?  

It's easy! Fill out a "You Made My Day" card, located in the entrance foyer of the SCGS Library. Write a note on the back of the card telling us a little about your experience. You can sign your name or choose to remain anonymous. Please include the name or a description of the person who made your day. You can drop the card off at the librarian's desk, slip it into the wooden You Made My Day box in the foyer, or mail it to the SCGS Library after your visit. Help us thank our volunteers. And Thank YOU for taking the time to give our volunteers some well-deserved recognition.

SCGS Friday Proofreading Club: 1890 Project

Where can you meet jail prisoners, saloon permit owners, poor farm residents, newlyweds and newborns of LA County of 1890?  Why, the Southern California Genealogical Society, of course. 

It's just the place to beat the heat and socialize with your fellow family historians.  Pop in to the SCGS Library in Burbank and proofread records that have been collected for the long-term project to reconstruct the 1890 Los Angeles County census.

After they are proofread, these records will soon be added to the compilation of records that form the 1890 Project to reconstruct the 1890 Census for Los Angeles.  Since the Project's inception in 2004, the 1890 Project has produced four volumes of Citizenship Intentions, the 1892 Great Register of Voters, fifteen volumes of Marriage Records, three volumes of the index to Los Angeles County Naturalizations. Other records in the 1890 Project "stew" are cemetery records, names of dental patients, building permit holders, and other miscellaneous record sets.


The Friday Proofreading Club meets on Fridays from 10am to 4pm.  Work the hours that best fit your schedule. No RSVP is necessary - just show up and ask for Louise.

SCGS Volunteer Spotlight: Connie Wills

Connie Wills is a librarian who gives tours and provides assistance to patrons and, as she puts it, is "general assistant for whatever needs doing, especially if it needs a long or high reach." She also works in the back room, organizing periodicals and helps out at Jamboree. In the past, she was involved with PTA and the League of Women Voters.

She grew up in Hinsdale, Illinois and attended college at Champaign-Urbana in Illinois. She has lived in homes far and wide: Cambridge, MA; The Hague, The Netherlands; Palo Alto, CA; South Pasadena, CA; Taipei, Taiwan and finally Pasadena, CA. She's been married to her husband, Jack for 52 years, who is a semi-retired professor. Jack and Connie have 5 grown children, 7 grandchildren, and 2 great-grandchildren. Connie is a not-entirely-retired tax preparer and spends her leisure time reading mysteries, doing stitchery and solving jigsaw puzzles.

SCGS Volunteer Spotlight: Peggy Schulz

Peggy Schulz keeps very busy as the Society's Financial Secretary, Library volunteer, and a valuable member of the Jamboree registration team. She fulfills mail orders and distributes all website orders.

In the past, she has served on the Board of Directors, processed bulk mailings and served as Volunteer Coordinator. Peggy has been instrumental in compiling and producing several publications, including cemetery and death record indices and a family history book.

She was born in Los Angeles, grew up in Houston, lived briefly in Gardena, and has lived in Sherman Oaks for 43 years. Her daughters and their families are in Pasadena and Glendale, and her son lives in Oakland. Her favorite pastimes are genealogy, genealogy and genealogy!
