[CA--SCGS] The Southern California Genealogy Society Library Will Remain Closed Until Further Notice

Based on the recommendations of the Los Angeles County Public Heath and out of concern for the health and safety of our guests, volunteers, and staff, the Southern California Genealogical Library (SCGS) in Burbank will remain closed until further notice.

We encourage our members to log-in to take advantage of our recorded webinars, read past issues of The Searcher, and use our online databases.  The new Southern California 1890 Project (R) is available online for researchers.  Our research team is taking orders for research assistance and our store is still shipping orders.

Many of our interest groups are now holding meetings online, and we are working to have the remaining interest groups online soon. Please check our SCGS calendar for dates and times.

We apologize for any inconvenience.

Best of health to you all.

[CA--SCGS] The SCGS Library Will Remain Closed Through the End of June 2020

Due to the continuing concerns over Covid-19 and our efforts to prevent and slow the spread of the virus by maintaining social distancing, the SCGS library will be remain closed to patron through the end of June 2020 and into the first part of July 2020.

We do have an excellent research team available to assist you with your research. Go to our SCGS website to order services, at SCGS Research Team Assistance.

We at SCGS are following the guidelines as mandated by the County of Los Angeles. Currently, the county is aiming at a reopen date of July 4, 2020.  We at SCGS are hopeful that the SCGS library will reopen on Tuesday, July 7, 2020. However, that decision will be based on data and science models as offered by the county.

We will keep you updated when additional information is available.

We will continue to work with all of our SCGS Interest Groups (Ethnic, Computer Software, Writer's Group, and DNA) to organize online meetings for the month of June and beyond (as needed). We will post those updates once each group has finalized their plans.

Please note that our Jamboree Webinar Extension Series will go on as planned. We look forward to 'seeing' you online!

Our Jamboree committee continues to discuss our plans for the 2021 Jamboree conference.

  • Specialties of Our Society: California & Los Angeles County Research
In our own geographic area, we can offer clients information on the vital areas of birth, death and marriage, plus newspaper obituaries. We also have extensive records of people coming to the California Gold Rush, their names being on ship records, overland wagon train lists, and the newspapers of the day. SCGS also produced an 1852 census for the new State of California.

    United States Research
Our collection has materials for almost every county in the United States. This makes our library, and its research team, well positioned to conduct studies on your ancestors as they migrated to and around this country.
    • Revolutionary War Ancestors - if your ancestor was born before 1765 there is a strong possibility that he served in the Revolutionary War.

    • American Colonial Wars - Thousands of Americans from Maine to South Carolina fought in the many Colonial Wars from the Pequot War in 1637 to the French & Indian Wars ending in 1762.

    • Massachusetts Town Records – Vital Records listing births, marriages & deaths have been compiled for most of the towns of Massachusetts up to 1850.  SCGS has over 200 of these town records.

    • California Gold Rush - Our records include the names of peoples coming overland and by ship; many names were recorded in the newspapers of the day.  In addition to the 1850 and 1860 U.S. Censuses, we have the California Census for 1852.

    • Los Angeles County Records searches – births, marriages, deaths in Los Angeles County and California; newspaper obituaries.

    • Personalized research - we are prepared to help you knock down those block walls.  Tell us about your research puzzles and we will attempt to help you solve them.
    Cornish Records Search
SCGS has one of the great collections of Cornish ancestry records, many of which go back to the 1500s. These records include the celebrated Ross Collection of births, marriages, deaths and other official records of Government and Church in Cornwall. A search can also be made of the Cornish miners of California and Michigan and other areas where Cornish people were involved.

    French-Canadian Research
We are the home of the French-Canadian Heritage Society of California and one of the largest collections of French-Canadian resources in the USA. Our researchers will search the Blue and Red Drouin, Jette, Tanguay, PRDH, and the marriage records of the 1000 parishes, and the many other FC resources we have to help you document your ancestry.

The Future of the Southern California Jamboree

The Southern California Genealogy Jamboree has never shied away from change.
Jamboree started 50 years ago as a one-day single room exhibitor show. Today, the Jamboree brand has evolved to offer:
    • Three conferences over four days – Genetic Genealogy, Genealogy Jamboree and JamboFree – with over 120 classes, nationally and internationally known speakers, and major exhibitors.
    • Twenty-two annual webinars free at broadcast, and available on-demand for SCGS members.
    • A website, online services, digital communications and marketing to a worldwide network of genealogical and historical societies.

    Jamboree loves to innovate.
Jamboree was the first genealogy conference to offer a whole day dedicated to genetic genealogy and the first to offer a mobile app. It is still the only single Society-sponsored genealogy conference to be all-volunteer created and run.

    It’s time to leap forward.
Genealogists are constantly evolving with technology. Today many enjoy educational opportunities through online webinars and virtual conferences. As a result, traditional in-person conferences, like Jamboree, are impacted as they compete for resources, speakers and genealogy dollars. The time has come for SCGS and Jamboree to take a leap forward and reinvent. The new Jamboree is under construction and plans to return in June 2021.

    What you can do?
Add your voice. Tell SCGS what you want in a conference. Take the survey coming out later this summer and make your mark on creating the next Jamboree.

    Join us in 2021.
What can you expect? An outstanding educational conference in the form you want and at a reasonable price. SCGS has always structured Jamboree to be what members, attendees and volunteers want. As always, we promise to create a fun and friendly learning environment for serious genealogists.

Thank you for 50 years of support for Genealogy Jamboree, and for your continued support as we leap forward to the future of Jamboree in 2021.

The Film Festival opens Thursday, April 25, 2019 and runs through Thursday May 2, 2019
Two films in particular may be of interest to SCGS members.
Film 1: You Only Die Twice
Monday April 29, 8.30 pm Theater
The Lot 3 in Fashion Island, Newport Beach

Yair Lev, an Israeli documentarist, turns to a detective and sets on a personal and historical journey to uncover the true identity of the man who stole his grandfather's identity during WWII. With the help of documents found in archives, letters and family photos revealed suddenly in drawers - objects that time had forgotten - the filmmaker leads this hectic search to unique locations and remarkable people from the two sides of the historical fence with which the enigma is finally solved.

Film 2: Who Will Write Our History?
Thursday May 2 Lido Theater, Newport Beach

    From the filmmakers website https://whowillwriteourhistory.com:
In November 1940, days after the Nazis sealed 450,000 Jews in the Warsaw Ghetto, a secret band of journalists, scholars and community leaders decided to fight back. Led by historian Emanuel Ringelblum and known by the code name Oyneg Shabes, this clandestine group vowed to defeat Nazi lies and propaganda not with guns or fists but with pen and paper.
Now, for the first time, their story is told as a feature documentary. Written, produced and directed by Roberta Grossman and executive produced by Nancy Spielberg, Who Will Write Our History mixes the writings of the Oyneg Shabes archive with new interviews, rarely seen footage and stunning dramatizations to transport us inside the Ghetto and the lives of these courageous resistance fighters. They defied their murderous enemy with the ultimate weapon–the truth–and risked everything so that their archive would survive the war, even if they did not.
