Diane Henriks Presention: 
"Finding Descendants in your Family Tree"

is Preceded by our annual Oktoberfest Pot Luck Luncheon

Diane Henriks has been researching her family history for the past several years. She has researched many of her own family lines, as well as being paid to research for others. Diane is a member of APG and SCGS. She was asked by genealogists at the SCGS to publish her works. What started out as a small hobby, has since become  great obsession.  

Some of Diane's Family Lines are: Steinman/n Taylor, Hulet, Stubbins, Caesar, Graciano, Gutierres, Baer, Garman, Eddy, Trader, Beveridge, Brown, Murphy, West...and others. 

Diane is currently working on publishing "The Descendants of Jacob Garman", The "Descendants of Abraham Trader", and a non blood relative's line, 
"The Descendants of Daniel Riley Loving "Lovan"

Plus you won't want to miss out on our annual Oktoberfest Pot Luck Luncheon! 
This year, The Italian Group will join The German Group in honor of both heritages!
Set-up begins 11:00am & We'll Begin Serving at 11:45am

The goal of the SCGS German Interest Group is to provide a wide range of resources both inside and outside the SCGS Library to help trace German families. Throughout 2017, our German Group will renew its "Routing Our Roots" as well as present short programs on German Exiles in Los Angeles County, History of German Towns, Human Interest Stories on folks of German Heritage, learning German Words and Old German Script, plus any last minute thoughts.

The new deadline is Saturday, September 8, 2018

Did you intend to submit but have yet to do it?  We want to allow you the opportunity to submit!

The Southern California Genealogical Society (SCGS) Call for Presentations for the 50th Annual Southern California Genealogy Jamboree (Friday- Saturday, May 31- June 2, 2019), 7th Annual SCGS Genetic Genealogy Conference (Thursday, May 30, 2019), Jamboree Workshops held at the Los Angeles Marriott Burbank Airport Hotel, Burbank, California and for the JES Webinar program has been extended and closes Saturday, September 8, 2018 at midnight.

Genealogy Jamboree, the Genetic Genealogy conference and JES Webinars draw attendees of all experience levels, from the first-time conference attendee to conference veterans.  We encourage the submission of all levels of sessions.  Presentations on all topics will be considered.  New presentations are encouraged. 

The SCGS Jamboree Committee and/or JES Webinar Committee, at its sole discretion, may select none, some, or all of the presentations submitted by any speaker.

Working with Images in Family Tree Maker
Part 3

Part 3. “Editing Images for FTM.” Photos a little off-kilter? Is your picture slanted or sideways? Does it look washed out or have too much extraneous content?  This session will demonstrate image editing tools – both inside Family Tree Maker and externally on the computer.

Never required, but often desired - basic improvements covered will include rotation, cropping, brightness and contrast as well as maneuvering the changes into FTM.

Additionally, at the beginning, there will be a brief overview of  the recent significant changes with the NEW Find A Grave website.

Dick will also be at the library by 2:30 pm to chat and provide FTM assistance.

Adoption Research can be a very emotional undertaking whether you are the adoptee or the parent. If you are working an ancestral adoption (someone long ago was adopted) records can be scarce. Come and find out tips for Researching through Adoption Records.  



Introduction to Tax, Land and Military Records    2:10 to 3:10 p.m.

This class will introduce you to the vast array of Tax, Military and Land records which could just help you break through those brick walls. Come take your research to the next level.


Ports of Entry  3:20 to 4:20 p.m.

All ships and ports kept records and many of our ancestors did not come through Ellis Island. Come learn about the other ports and how to find their records Some discussion of Ellis Island and Castle Garden will be included.

Kim von Aspern-Parker has been researching her family history since the bug bit her in 1987. She actively searches for family on both her adopted line and her birth line. In addition Ms. von Aspern-Parker has worked as a professional genealogical researcher for more than 19 years. She is a member of the Association of Professional Genealogists, the National Genealogical Society, and the Genealogical Speakers Guild. When she is not doing genealogy research for herself or others Ms. von Aspern-Parker likes to do needlework and read.

1.) Tales of heroic ancestors/family members

2.) Health-related/illness stories, and associated medical technology, involving         your ancestors/family members 

As always, there is no need to stick to a word count or the prompts, just bring whichever genealogy/memoir/family history related writing you’re working on!

The African American Interest Group meets on the second Saturday following the free SCGS monthly Lunch and Learn Education program.  Individual research assistance is available. Please try to arrive by 4:00 pm.
SCGS members have free in-Library online access to Ancestry Library Edition, American Ancestors (NEHGS), AccessNewspaper ARCHIVE, World Vital Records, and MyHeritage Library Edition. The library is not open for any other research during the meeting.

Walt Sturrock is a professional artist, photographer, and instructor for 30 + years. He has illustrated 6 children's books,a and was the Training Manager at Walt Disney Animation Studios for 14 years. He currently works as a Webmaster, Instructor, and Technical Illustrator for a leading Aerospace company.

Over the past few years, Walt has continued to share with the German group, his family heritage as well as his presentations on Old German Script and Photo Editing.

On August 18th, Walt Sturrock will present to the German Group: "Events Surrounding the Life of Henry Pascale"

Part 2. “Acquiring Images for FTM.” Just how do images "get into" Family Tree Maker? Indirectly via FTM's FamilySync and through the Web Search workspace. But they can also be directly added from computer files and may come from Internet sites like Ancestry, FamilySearch and Find A Grave, but also from devices like cameras, scanners and smartphone.  Live demonstrations will illustrate the processes for each device.
