[CA--SCGS] Be An Inspiration for Education, Preservation, and Genealogy Research--Donate to the Century Club Today!

Dear SCGS Members and Family History Friends,

Your contributions matter!

Isn’t it great to be able to attend interest group meetings online, research our subscription databases remotely, and find more of our books available remotely through our catalog? Covid-19 has forced many changes upon all of us and is driving many improvements for our members who do not live close to the library. Thanks to your generous donations, we have been able to implement these many changes to our services.

Our donation campaign for 2022 starts November 1.  As you may be aware, it is possible that the library will be moving to a new location before our lease is up in November 2022. It will take a lot of extra cash to pay for moving fees and building out the new location to meet our needs. Any donation you can make to the general fund at this time will make the process that much easier. If you live too far away to visit, you can order Research Assistance through www.scgsgenealogy.com/research/research-team.html.

All research is handled through emails and payment is through the shopping cart.

THREE WAYS TO GIVE:

1)      Online at https://next.SCGSgenealogy.com/donate/ to pay by Credit Card, PayPal or print and mail

2)      SCGS Facebook page (www.facebook.com/scgsgenealogy/): Click the Donate button to pay via PayPal

3)            3)   By Mail:  Send your check to: SCGS, 417 Irving Drive, Burbank, CA 91504

For more information on learning from home with Lunch and Learn and SCGS Interest Groups, or to hire help from our Research Team, email scgs@scgsgenealogy.com

On behalf of the SCGS Board and all our volunteers, please continue to stay safe.

And, for your support and consideration, we say “Thank You”!

[CA--SCGS] SCGS Library Will Close for March and April 2020. Library Will Reopen on May 1, 2020.

Due to the spread of Covid-19 and information gained from health providers instructing people over 60 to avoid even small gatherings and as a preventative measure for slowing the spread of the virus against which there is no known protection, we will be closing the SCGS library for the remainder of the month of March and for all of April. We will re-open on May 1, 2020.

All meetings scheduled at the library have been cancelled during this time.

Please note that our Jamboree Webinar Extension Series will go on as planned. We look forward to 'seeing' you online!

Southern California Genealogical Society
Education, Preservation, Genealogical Inspiration

For nearly 60 years, the Southern California Genealogical Society (SCGS) has served the genealogical community through educational programs, events and through the SCGS Family Research Library in Burbank, California.

During this time, we have watched countless family historians, genealogists, researchers, and library patrons discover the joys and wonder of genealogy. SCGS volunteers have both rejoiced and commiserated with those they have assisted. Family members have been discovered, families have reunited, and bonds have been forged.

Through it all, YOU have been our inspiration. Your drive to find more has driven us to seek new ways to provide unique educational opportunities to help you reach your family research goals.

Whether it's our two annual conferences in June- the Southern California Genealogy Jamboree and Genetic Genealogy Day - or live-streaming, webinars, seminars, interest groups, research assistance and arranging access to commercial database products from home for our members, we continue to look for ways to innovate and take advantage of the newest technologies.

You are our inspiration - but we need your support to survive and continue

In order to meet our mission and provide the programs and services that will help you reach your family research goals, SCGS needs your help during the annual Century Club fundraising drive.

The Future of the Southern California Jamboree

The Southern California Genealogy Jamboree has never shied away from change.
Jamboree started 50 years ago as a one-day single room exhibitor show. Today, the Jamboree brand has evolved to offer:
  • Three conferences over four days – Genetic Genealogy, Genealogy Jamboree and JamboFree – with over 120 classes, nationally and internationally known speakers, and major exhibitors.
  • Twenty-two annual webinars free at broadcast, and available on-demand for SCGS members.
  • A website, online services, digital communications and marketing to a worldwide network of genealogical and historical societies.

Jamboree loves to innovate.
Jamboree was the first genealogy conference to offer a whole day dedicated to genetic genealogy and the first to offer a mobile app. It is still the only single Society-sponsored genealogy conference to be all-volunteer created and run.

It’s time to leap forward.
Genealogists are constantly evolving with technology. Today many enjoy educational opportunities through online webinars and virtual conferences. As a result, traditional in-person conferences, like Jamboree, are impacted as they compete for resources, speakers and genealogy dollars. The time has come for SCGS and Jamboree to take a leap forward and reinvent. The new Jamboree is under construction and plans to return in June 2021.

What you can do?
Add your voice. Tell SCGS what you want in a conference. Take the survey coming out later this summer and make your mark on creating the next Jamboree.

Join us in 2021.
What can you expect? An outstanding educational conference in the form you want and at a reasonable price. SCGS has always structured Jamboree to be what members, attendees and volunteers want. As always, we promise to create a fun and friendly learning environment for serious genealogists.

Thank you for 50 years of support for Genealogy Jamboree, and for your continued support as we leap forward to the future of Jamboree in 2021.

[CA-SCGS] New SCGS Conference and Library Policies

We are living in a time when certain policies need to be acknowledged and adhered to.  It is essential at SCGS that we provide you with the expectations of enjoyment in our library and while attending our conferences.  Please read our policies, as they define our guidelines for a successful conference, in all lectures, and during any SCGS library experience.  We thank you in advance for reading and abiding by these new rules and regulations.

Thank You

The SCGS Board Of Directors

NON DISCRIMINATION POLICY

Southern California Genealogical Society is dedicated to providing an environment free from discrimination where everyone is treated with respect and dignity. Discrimination is a sociological term referring to the prejudicial treatment of an individual based solely on their membership (whether voluntary or involuntary) in a certain group or category. Discrimination is the actual behavior towards members of another group. It involves excluding or restricting members of one group from opportunities that are available to other groups.
Southern California Genealogical Society does not engage in or endorse discrimination, harassment, and bullying against any person for any reason due to age, ancestry, color, disability or handicap, national origin, race, religion, gender, sexual or affectional orientation, gender identity, genetic information, appearance, political affiliation, marital status, veteran status, or any other characteristic prohibited by state or local law.
In addition, Southern California Genealogical Society will not fund or participate in specific events, as a vendor, speaker or in other roles, in which individuals are barred from access to services due to such discrimination.
This policy was created based on a similar policy at Abundant Genealogy and is used by permission.

SOCIAL MEDIA POLICY

The Southern California Genealogical Society is an active supporter of the use of social media (e.g. Facebook, Twitter, and blogging) at its events, including the society' annual Genealogy Jamboree. Event attendees are allowed and encouraged to promote, critique, and review the conference, its exhibitors, speakers, and activities using these forms of media.
Use of smartphones, notebooks, laptops, tablets, etc., shall not disrupt other attendees. Mobile device ringers must be set to silent during lecture sessions.
Attendees are prohibited from recording the proceedings of any lecture or workshop session by any means, including but not limited to photography, audio recording, video recording, or verbatim transcription, without expressed written permission from both SCGS and the lecture speaker. Some sessions will be professionally audio recorded and available for purchase after the event.
Social media may be used to summarize or extract lecture content provided:
(1) the author is referenced and cited appropriately; and
(2) the material is not shared in full.
We fully respect the intellectual property rights of the authors of syllabus materials and lecture content. Copyright laws apply.
