[CA-SCGS] GENEii Writers Contest Winners Announced

Congratulations to the winners of the 2015 GENEii Family History Writers Contest, sponsored by the Southern California Genealogical Society! The Family History Writing Contest honors writers who show mastery in the genres of Memoir and Literary Non-fiction.

This year’s contest had 107 entries from 94 authors. While this is smaller than last year’s participation, the response was again global. There were 33 stories of fewer than 1,000 words and 74 stories containing between 1,000 and 2,000 words.

26 of the 50 states were represented. In addition, we have entries from Australia, Canada, India, Indonesia, The Philippines, Russia, Great Britain, Israel as well as one from a US Military APO address.

Many thanks to all the authors who collectively contributed these 107 entries. The winning submissions will be published in The Searcher during 2016 and on the SCGS website. Winning entries from past years can be found on the SCGS website.

The contest will be reworked for 2017. So there will be no contest in 2016. Thanks again for your participation.

[CA-SCGS] Tips for Entering the 2015 GENEii Contest

Entering the 2015 GENEii Family History Writing Contest

Many of you are considering submitting an entry to the SCGS GENEii Family History Writing Contest. As coordinator of the contest, I would like to pass on some hints about both submitting a story and creating an entry that will catch the eyes of the judges.

Your entry will be competing with between 100 and 300 other entries. Please note that this is a contest that covers two main publishing genres: literary non-fiction and memoir. Both of these forms require that the author tell a story using techniques that are most frequently identified with writing fiction. The common factor is ‘The Story’. The story has to have overall interest and impact. As such, it should evoke emotions in the reader.

The story must have the basic historical and genealogical facts correct. However, it is much more than a recitation of names, dates and places. The story must be crafted with care with regard to basic writing mechanics: spelling, grammar, voice, language and citations, if appropriate.

Entering multiple times will not increase the author’s chance of winning. However, submitting a thoughtful, well-crafted story showing human and historical interest is the best strategy. At most, an author can expect to accomplish this with a single story in each category. In addition, just because the story was published elsewhere does not mean that it will automatically be a winner.

Read your story out loud to friends and family. Take their suggestions to heart. Rewrite multiple times. Submit only the best of your work to the appropriate category. Those qualities will pique the interest of the judges.

After you have the best possible story that you can write, then be sure to follow the contest rules. In particular, your contact information and cover letter information, must be in the body of your e-mail along with the word count. This information may not be in a separate attachment. Your story must be in a single attachment either in Adobe PDF format or Microsoft Word format. Apple formats, WordPerfect formats, pictures or other formats are unacceptable. Multiple entries in a single e-mail are unacceptable. Every word in the attached story counts except for references and citations, which should be at the end of the document. Remember, only electronic entries are accepted. Entries that are submitted by mail will be returned unopened.

If your work does not conform to the rules, it will be disqualified. In the past, authors have been given the chance to resubmit. With several hundred entries, that will no longer be possible. Whatever you submit on or before December 31, 2015 will be considered your entry. If you did not conform to the rules, your entry will be returned explaining why the entry is unacceptable.

Do you like to write?

Do you have an ancestor whose story is just begging to be told? A fascinating tale of local history? How about that memoir you've been meaning to start for your loved ones? 

Now is the time to start your writing engines! 

SCGS is proud to sponsor the 16^th annual GENEii Family History Writing Contest.  Entries must be received between November 1 and December 31, 2015.  
We're calling for non-fiction articles that describe family or local history and capture a family experience or the character of a locality, or non-fiction character sketches or memoirs that give a sense of an individual's character and personality.

The writing contest offers prizes in two categories:

Category 1: Articles of 1,000-2,000 words in length.

Category 2: Articles of 1,000 words or less. 

Both categories are for family history or local-history stories, memoirs, or character sketches. Submissions may be either unpublished or previously published.

Each entry must be submitted via e-mail in digital format with the cover letter in the body of the e-mail.

GENEii Writers Contest Winners Announced

Congratulations to the winners of the 2014 GENEii Family History Writers Contest, sponsored by the Southern California Genealogical Society! The Family History Writing Contest honors writers who show mastery in the genres of Memoir and Literary Non-fiction.

223 entries were submitted by 178 authors. This is more than double last year's participation. The response was truly global. 41 of the 50 states were represented, as well as our first submission from Puerto Rico, a United States territory. In addition, we have entries from Australia, Canada, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Serbia, Turkey and various places in the British Isles. For winners, this seems to be a California year with 5 of 12 winners from the Golden State.

April 21, 2011 - BURBANK, CALIFORNIA. The Southern California Genealogical Society announces the winners of the 2010 GENEii(sm) Family History Writing Contest which is sponsored by the Society.

Prizes are awarded in two categories. Category 1 is for articles between 1,000 and 2,000 words in length. Category 2 is for articles under 1,000 words in length. 11th GENEii Writing Contest - 2 Weeks Remain to Submit Entries

The 11th Annual Southern California Genealogical Society GENEii Family History Writing Contest is now accepting entries. Only two weeks remain in the submission period.

Each entry must be submitted via email. The cover letter should be included in the body of the email. It should include the author’s name, address, telephone number, and e-mail address; the title of the article; the word count; and the category entered (1 or 2).

The writing contest offers cash awards in two categories:

Category 1: Family history or local history articles of 1,000-2,000 words in length, published or unpublished. If previously published, entries must be accompanied by the written permission of the publisher allowing the article to be reprinted by SCGS. Awards: 1st Place, $200. 2nd Place, $100. 3rd Place, $50. Honorable mentions and finalists, certificate.

Category 2: Family history or local history articles of 1,000 words or less, published or unpublished. If previously published, entries must be accompanied by the written permission of the publisher allowing the article to be reprinted by SCGS.Awards: 1st Place, $100. 2nd Place, $50. 3rd Place, $25.
