Topic: Understanding the X Chromosome in Genetic Genealogy

The X chromosome has a unique inheritance pattern. It should not be confused with the mitochondrial DNA which is only passed down from maternal ancestors. This presentation will explain in layman’s
terms both the scientific basis of the X chromosome inheritance patterns and its practical use for genealogists. Adoptees will want to find out why it is such an important chromosome and how it
differs from the other chromosomes. It is particularly useful for half-sisters looking for their biological father in common. Learn how to identify an X match in a direct-to-consumer online DNA browser.
Even if your chosen test company does not provide X matches, you may still be able to upload your DNA to a third party site such as GEDmatch and make new discoveries. Success stories and practical
uses will be presented. This discussion will be most beneficial if you have already tested your DNA for genealogy purposes and have at least an intermediate understanding of the match process.

Presenter: Kathryn Johnston M.D. has been actively studying genetic genealogy since 2004. She wrote the chapter, “X-DNA Techniques and Limitations” for the book, Advanced Genetic Genealogy: Techniques and Case Studies. Editor Debbie Parker Wayne, Wayne Research, Cushing Texas. 2019.

Finding Mona: An Autosomal DNA Detective Story
Speaker: Megan Lee

A gift of heritage; the adoptee solves her mother’s adoption and presents her with the results. This lecture balances methodologies, tools, and techniques used to solve adoptions and other challenging
brick walls with the complex and emotional components of adoption integration included.

Megan Lee learned DNA through her adoption. She started DNA courses in 2013 without the constraints of a tree or expected results. She let the inheritance patterns of the DNA teach her the science. Now she’s addicted to DNA and even solved her double adoption! Megan has earned an Advanced Genetic Genealogy Certificate from GRIP, a Genetic Genealogy Certificate from Excelsior College, a Certificate in Genealogy from Boston University, and ProGen.

Saturday, May 30, 2020 – DNA Painter and Its Various Tools

Did you miss the DNA Painter Workshop at Jamboree because it sold out?  Don’t miss out on an opportunity to learn about this valuable tool. This popular tool continues to advance its capabilities to show how different ancestors contributed to your own genetic profile.  The color coded chromosome maps you can create with this program helps illuminate the influences of your ancestral heritage. The What Are the Odds (WATO) probability tools show possible ancestral connections.

See https://dnapainter.com/help for more information on this powerful tool.

Presenter: Tony Allegra is a beta tester for Living DNA and has helped explain this company’s value to others at Jamboree.  He is extremely knowledgeable about the various tools interpreting results of autosomal DNA tests and is an advocate for using the resources available in the DNA Painter suite.  .

RECAP of German Interest Group's April 15, 2017 meeting...

Charles Signor Bier presented part of his "New Yorker Palatines 1700-2017". He will continue this presentation during our May 20, 2017 meeting.

During our April meeting, Edward introduced us to the following German words:
Bamberg(er); Berlin(er); Frankfurt(er); Hamburg(er); Coffman (Kaufmann) (Kaufen); Birdsong (Vogelsang); Heilige Geisteskirche (Holy Ghost Church or Holy Spirit Church); Kirchenarchive; Kirchenbezirk (District); Kirchenbuch;  Kirchenjahr; Kirchenregister; Kirchensteuer (tax); Kirchenzehnt (ties) Kircher (pastor).

Our Deutsch phrases focused on the German Word 'wo' (where).
An introduction to German History focused on the years 230 - 300 AD
Barbara's human interest person of the month was Dwight D. Eisenhower's ancestry.
We viewed the 2nd half of Melanie's documentary on Rothenburg ob der Tauber which covered the plagues, the Thirty Years War, the local wine industry, and the affects WWII had on this town.

Upcoming on May 20, 2017. Pam Folden presents: "What's In A Name And Other Myths"

Jana Bickel presents her Wetzel Family

About Jana:

I have been researching my genealogy since 1971 when my aunts told me I was related to a famous Indian fighter Lewis Wetzel, the hero of Zane Grey's "Spirit of the Border".   Hours of research proved that Lewis' brother, Jacob, was my direct ancestor. Later, in the 1980's I traced my Bickel ancestry to Graben, Baden with help from Elizabeth Sharp at the Immigrant Library.  I sent a letter to all 7 Bickels in Graben and got a response from two Bickels and the town historian, Berthold Heil, who provided me with my direct ancestors based on church records.  The family story was that my ancestor, John Fredrick Bickel stowed away on a boat to America with his brother, leaving Germany to avoid the draft and ending up fighting in the Civil War.  Mr. Heil explained that it was a cousin not a brother who went with John Fredrick Bickel to America.  J.F. had already done military service in Baden.  His service in the civil war was covered during my talk on Germans in Missouri.  I doubt that J.F. stowed away on the boat to America.  It makes a nice story but I don't see how it would be possible.  I recently purchased a town history of Graben.  It is, of course, in German so my next project is to get at least some of it translated.  I hope someday to visit Graben.

The goal of the SCGS German Interest Group is to provide a wide range of resources both inside and outside the SCGS Library to help trace German families. Throughout 2017, our German Group will renew its "Routing Our Roots" as well as present short programs on German Exiles in Los Angeles County, History of German Towns, Human Interest Stories on folks of German Heritage, learning German Words and Old German Script, plus any last minute thoughts.
