Do you have an event you would like featured in our SoCal Events posts? SCGS is happy to help out and let our readers know of opportunities to further their genealogical education. Send the date, conference or seminar title, featured speaker, and a live link to your website or flyer to socialmedia@scgsgenealogy.com with the heading "SoCal Event".

Submissions must be received by March 18 for the April/May edition, by May 13 for June/July (SCGS and Social Meida will be involved with the final preparations for our Jamboree and Genetic Genealogy 2016 conferences in June- so we need to get this one set up in advance), and by July 15 for Aug/Sept.

[CA-SCGS] Quarterly SCGS Irish Workshop - Sunday, January 31, 2016

Do you have Irish roots? Are you interested in Celtic history?

If the answer to either question is yes, then you won’t want to miss the next quarterly SCGS Irish Workshop on Sunday, January 31st, 2016 from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm at the SCGS Family Research Library in Burbank.

The meeting will begin at 10:00 am with a general question and answer session.  The group will break for lunch from 12:00 noon to 1:00 pm. After lunch, a presentation about 17th Century Sources will begin. If time permits, a review of 18th Century Sources will be conducted.

Since there is no 5th Sunday in March, we are celebrating St. Patrick’s Day early!  So wear your green or orange, and bring your favorite family memories, tales of your favorite Irish characters and maybe even some Irish family recipes to share. Favorite Irish goodies would be welcome too!

Feel free to bring your laptop, tablet or another device to join in and do some researching of your own. There will be time allotted for help with your personal research at the end of the discussion.

There is no fee for participating and you do not need to be an SCGS member to attend. For more information click here. The library will be closed for general research.

[CA-SCGS] Preserve the Pensions Project Update

In 2015, SCGS took up the challenge issued by the Federation of Genealogical Societies (FGS) to create a matching program for donations to the Preserve the Pensions project. The SCGS Board of Directors voted to match, on a dollar-for-dollar basis, the first $2,500 of donations made by SCGS members, Jamboree guests, and others in support of the monumental task of digitizing 7.2 million pages of pension records.

Your generous donations, along with the SCGS pledge, contributed over $6,700 to the FGS campaign, ensuring the digitization and preservation of thousands of pages of pension files. Thanks to your generosity, images of important genealogical and historical significance will be preserved for future generations.

The Federation of Genealogical Societies recently announced the exciting news that the $2 million dollar mark was surpassed in 2015 with the generous support of donors like you. Please take a moment to read more about the project on the FGS Voice Blog.

With our sincere gratitude for your support,

The Board of Directors

[CA-SCGS] SCGS at Genealogy Roadshow

Thank you to everyone who stopped by the Southern California Genealogical Society booth at Union Station on Saturday for the taping of Genealogy Roadshow. It was wonderful to meet new friends, greet members, and make new connections. We loved hearing your research stories, and helping to find new resources or avenues for research!

It was so exciting to watch the production of the show and meet the people behind the scenes who work so hard to make both the show and the events surrounding it such a success. The show hosts Kenyatta D. Berry, Joshua Taylor, and Mary Tedesco were gracious and welcoming to all. It was a pleasure to watch them at work.

Clockwise from left: Signs posted in Union Station directing participants; show hosts Mary Tedesco, Joshua Taylor, Kenyatta D. Berry; SCGS members Jane Van Tour and Adrian Foushee; filming of a segment wth Joshua Taylor; SCGS member Lynne Parmenter discussing genealogy; SCGS My Heritage t-shirts on display!; SCGS members Adrian Foushee, Lynne Parmenter, Jane Van Tour, Lise Harding and The Family Curator & Jamboree friend, Denise Levenick.

Thank you to all the SCGS members and members of the SCGS board of directors who helped make this event a success and who came to support Genealogy Roadshow. Special thanks to Joel Fritsche for photos and background assistance.

Genealogy Roadshow season 3 will air starting May 17, 2016.  For more information, please visit Genealogy Roadshow at www.pbs.org.

A special note from SCGS member Jane Van Tour:

I have had the pleasure of attending other tapings of Season 3 of Genealogy Roadshow. This one is in our backyard - please come, you won't be disappointed! As you see the historic Union Station with its mixture of Spanish Colonial, Mission Revival and Art Deco architecture, open your genealogical minds. You may hear the notes of a Glen Miller song or see the many troops who moved through the station during World War II.  Perhaps, like our Jamboree Chair Alice Fairhurst, one of them was your relative. Visit the SCGS table and those of the other groups who are there. Please make sure to stop by the PBS table and get a picture with one of their signs and thank them for their programming. You can also use your research skills to find other things to do in the area.

The Southern California Genealogical Society would like to thank PBS and Genealogy Roadshow for this wonderful event and for the excellent work they do to provide educational opportunities and to showcase the richness and diversity that family history and genealogy can help us discover about our ancestors, and ourselves.

Things To Do Downtown

If you are so inspired by your visit to Genealogy Roadshow that you want to start investigating your family history immediately, you are in luck! The Los Angeles Public Library (LAPL) Central Library is located just a short distance away...and on the 16th, the SCGS is hosting a Genealogy Garage workshop "Is Your Family in the LAPL Family History Archives" from 11 am - 1 pm in the History & Genealogy Department, Lower Level 4.  To find out more, visit the SCGS website.

Whether you take a stroll over to El Pueblo de Los Angeles on Olvera Street, head to Chinatown, wander in search of some fantastic food, or take in nearby sights, there are unique opportunities to learn about the rich cultural diversity and experience the history of the area. [CA-SCGS] SCGS German Interest Group Meeting - Saturday, January 16, 2016

Interested in vintage automobiles and how you can date photographs by identifying them? Join the SCGS German Interest Group at their next meeting to be held from 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm on Saturday, January 16, 2016 in the SCGS Library. Group member, Bill Zappen will be giving a presentation on "Vintage Automobile Photos: Here and Abroad"

Edward McKelvey will present more information on "Common German Words" and Walt Sturrock will continue his series on "Reading Old German Gothic Script."

The group member of the month is Edie Ditmars

A proud "Schwob," Edie (aka Edelgard Helga Hofmann Kirchhoff Ditmars) joined SCGS under false pretenses. Born during an air raid in WWII Germany, she is more interested in discovering her family's place in that complex era than in her ancestral roots. To that end, she feels especially fortunate to count among her resources five 5-in. binders of family photos, rarities from an era when war destroyed such treasures; several binders of her mother's transcribed memories of life in Wuestenrot (near Heilbronn) and Ludwigsburg (near Stuttgart); a hand-drawn Stammbaum created for her great grandmother's 80th birthday in 1948; and many contemporaneous books and other artifacts. For a recent SCGS German Interest Group discussion of German cooking, Edie displayed many of the kitchen objects she is lucky to have received from her grandmother, as well as utensils that testify to the Schwobs' infamous frugality. Edie still hopes to discover relatives of her birth father who was born in Chemnitz, Saxony.

The goal of the SCGS German Interest Group is to provide a wide range of resources both inside and outside the SCGS Library to help trace German families. They often have a speaker on German research and the group is happy to offer assistance with your German research problems. New members and guests are always welcome.

[CA-SCGS] Family Tree Maker User Group meeting, January 10, 2016

Posted by Dick Humphrey

Preparing for Future Directions

Although sales of Family Tree Maker are now discontinued by Ancestry.com, the program itself along with TreeSync and Ancestry web clipping continue to function normally throughout the entire year 2016. There is absolutely no need to make any rash moves at this time. If changing to another genealogy software program will be the direction that you eventually take, do note that both Legacy and RootsMagic have already released updates to their offerings to improve the import of data from FTM. In fact, RootsMagic has done it twice in December!

Whether or not you make a switch, now is an excellent time to examine your tree for problems and quality issues.

In our January 10, 2016, meeting we will focus on the following topics:
  1. Clean up your tree. Procedures will be reviewed to check on people (facts and relationships), places, pictures (images) and sources - the principal data tables in FTM.
  2. Backup your tree. The backup process for Family Tree Maker and the procedures for downloading and uploading online Ancestry trees will be demonstrated.
  3. Transfer your tree. The mysterious GEDCOM is the standard for transferring data to other genealogy programs. An overview of GEDCOMs will be presented along with a demonstration of a sample migration of an FTM tree to other software.
Obviously this will be a ‘meaty’ session. So bring your thinking cap and get settled in for a fruitful time.
Dick will be at the library by 2:30pm to chat and provide FTM assistance.
